The Melbourne Energy Institute and The University of Melbourne’s School of Earth Sciences invite applications for a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship in Hydrogeology/Hydrogeochemistry. The Fellow will investigate the geochemistry, hydraulic properties and usage impacts of targeted groundwater systems in Victoria and Australia, in the context of their potential for carbon dioxide capture and storage.

Experience in groundwater chemical analyses, flow analysis and modelling, and well logging/testing is preferred. Remuneration includes a generous salary (AUD 65,368 p.a.) with yearly cost-of-living increases, plus benefits and relocation reimbursement (up to AUD 5000). Opportunities exist for the Fellow to gain teaching experience if desired. We anticipate submitting a highly competitive proposal by the end of the first year to the Australian Research Council to extend the duration of the two-year Fellowship by another 2-3 years.

The Opportunity
A three year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School of Geosciences, Monash University (Melbourne Australia) is available immediately as part of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT). The research involves the study of groundwater-surface water interaction and environmental issues in a coastal environment (coastal lakes, rivers, estuaries) at a range of temporal and spatial scales using a variety of geochemical and isotopic tracers (including major ions, stable isotopes, and radiogenic isotopes) coupled with physical hydrogeology. The project involves several staff members and students at Monash University and elsewhere in the NGCRT and offers ample opportunity for collaborative work. The aims of the broader project are to quantify the water balance in the coastal environment, to better understand nutrient and metal cycling in the intertidal zone, to assess issues associated with acid sulfate soil generation, and to assess the impacts of future environmental or landuse change on the groundwater and surface water.

The successful applicant will have a PhD and experience in the application of isotopic and geochemical tracers to understand hydrological processes. They will also have experience in designing and carrying out field sampling programs, evidence of the ability to carry out collaborative research, good publication record relative to experience, and good communication skills.

The Hope Downs Technical Services department are currently seeking a qualified Hydrogeologist to join their team. Reporting directly to the Superintendent Technical Services - Hope Downs, the successful candidate will be responsible for daily mine dewatering and water supply projects, including drilling rig supervision, logging, groundwater monitoring and analysis, as well as liaison with mine planning, mine operations and other departments. The role will also help provide direction to 1 Technical Officer on site.

The successful candidate will also be tasked with building an understanding of the environmental impact of Welli Wolli Creek caused by the significant dewatering efforts at Hope Downs. As a culturally sensitive site, management of Welli Wolli Creek will also rely heavily on the successful candidate’s strong interpersonal and influencing skills.

Key accountabilities:

• Planning of dewatering and water supply requirements to support the mine planning.
• Analyses and interprets groundwater data (groundwater monitoring, bore drilling, aquifer testing).
• Liaises with mine geotechnical engineers to ensure depressurisation targets are adequate.
• Scoping investigations and designing dewatering systems, determining requirements for drilling, monitoring and other field work.
• Training and mentoring of Technical Assistants within the team.
• Participate in budget planning process / provide input into the preparation of future CAPEX and OPEX budgets.
• Liaise with Specialist Environment – Welli Wolli Creek, Government Approvals, Environmental Approvals, project engineering and mine planning.
• Periodic analyses to follow groundwater behaviour in the Welli Wolli area (for example water levels, geophysics etc).
• Promote, develop and maintain a proactive safety culture by leading risk assessments and JHA’s for new tasks or projects.

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you will hold a relevant tertiary degree and have demonstrable experience in a similar role. Prior experience with hydrogeological data collection/interpretation, modelling and reporting, and water resource assessment is a must, as is previous experience with groundwater bore design, mine dewatering and depressurisation.

We are also seeking applicants with excellent written and verbal communications skills, good project management skills and a strong safety and continuous improvement focus. Familiarity with WA government approvals processes and previous exposure to Vulcan or similar mining and 3D geological software will be highly regarded. The position is funded by the two universities and a consortium of industry and government organisations coordinated by the UWA Geoscience Foundation. The two universities emphasise an integrated global perspective on issues posed by the earth and its environment and have international reputations for research and teaching in geology and geophysics. Heathgate, the owner of Beverley Uranium Mine located in the northern Flinders Ranges (about 600 km north of Adelaide) has established a state-of-the-art mining operation producing uranium. Heathgate provides high quality site accommodation and fully equipped catering facilities, and a fantastic fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) operation from Parafield Airport and Port Augusta Airports (only). With current expansion into surrounding Exploration Tenements you will be provided with fascinating work that guarantees a challenging career in the group.

Planning for new operations whilst maintaining current resources is no easy task; yet with your superior hydrogeological expertise and background this should be an enjoyable experience. Reporting directly to the Chief Mine Geologist, you will be responsible for planning, scheduling, reporting and providing technical support to neighbouring departments in line with business strategy.

The position will be responsible for selected aspects of the design, construction, operation and monitoring of the commercial Wellfields, with significant elements of database management, flow modelling and data presentation. Groundwater investigations into new ore bodies for mining feasibility assessment will also be a primary target as well as providing assistance with mine lease applications to allow for planning of sustainable mining and mine closure strategies.

Working at a senior level, you will also have the capability to effectively manage and motivate a small team of Hydrogeologists and have the ability to work in a multicultural environment with safety a key focus. The roster will be part time based at the mine site and part time based in the Adelaide CBD Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:


• Monitoring performance against production targets
• Efficient monitoring and reporting of wellfield performance
• Reporting of data/results from all wells
• Wellfield balance management
• Environment and occupational health and safety compliance
• Supervision of Hydrogeologists

• Tertiary qualifications in appropriate discipline such as hydrogeology, geology or reservoir engineering
• Extensive experience in mining related groundwater management
