You will spend time both in the field and at your desk investigating and analysing the environmental issues, as well as designing and modelling solutions for your clients. As a technical leader for the group, you’ll also be heavily involved with developing the skills of your team members, acting as a coach and mentor to them. Further to that, you will play an integral role in winning future work by virtue of your years of experience and local networks.

    You will hold relevant tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or Geology, (with a specialisation in Hydrogeology) and significant experience leading and managing groundwater projects.     The Melbourne Energy Institute and The University of Melbourne’s School of Earth Sciences invite applications for a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship in Hydrogeology/Hydrogeochemistry. The Fellow will investigate the geochemistry, hydraulic properties and usage impacts of targeted groundwater systems in Victoria and Australia, in the context of their potential for carbon dioxide capture and storage.

    Experience in groundwater chemical analyses, flow analysis and modelling, and well logging/testing is preferred. Remuneration includes a generous salary (AUD 65,368 p.a.) with yearly cost-of-living increases, plus benefits and relocation reimbursement (up to AUD 5000). Opportunities exist for the Fellow to gain teaching experience if desired. We anticipate submitting a highly competitive proposal by the end of the first year to the Australian Research Council to extend the duration of the two-year Fellowship by another 2-3 years.

    A three year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School of Geosciences, Monash University (Melbourne Australia) is available immediately as part of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT). The research involves the study of groundwater-surface water interaction and environmental issues in a coastal environment (coastal lakes, rivers, estuaries) at a range of temporal and spatial scales using a variety of geochemical and isotopic tracers (including major ions, stable isotopes, and radiogenic isotopes) coupled with physical hydrogeology. The project involves several staff members and students at Monash University and elsewhere in the NGCRT and offers ample opportunity for collaborative work. The aims of the broader project are to quantify the water balance in the coastal environment, to better understand nutrient and metal cycling in the intertidal zone, to assess issues associated with acid sulfate soil generation, and to assess the impacts of future environmental or landuse change on the groundwater and surface water.

    The successful applicant will have a PhD and experience in the application of isotopic and geochemical tracers to understand hydrological processes. They will also have experience in designing and carrying out field sampling programs, evidence of the ability to carry out collaborative research, good publication record relative to experience, and good communication skills.

Reporting directly to the Superintendent Technical Services - Hope Downs, the successful candidate will be responsible for daily mine dewatering and water supply projects, including drilling rig supervision, logging, groundwater monitoring and analysis, as well as liaison with mine planning, mine operations and other departments. The role will also help provide direction to 1 Technical Officer on site.

    The successful candidate will also be tasked with building an understanding of the environmental impact of Welli Wolli Creek caused by the significant dewatering efforts at Hope Downs. As a culturally sensitive site, management of Welli Wolli Creek will also rely heavily on the successful candidate’s strong interpersonal and influencing skills.

    Key accountabilities:
    • Planning of dewatering and water supply requirements to support the mine planning.
    • Analyses and interprets groundwater data (groundwater monitoring, bore drilling, aquifer testing).
    • Liaises with mine geotechnical engineers to ensure depressurisation targets are adequate.
    • Scoping investigations and designing dewatering systems, determining requirements for drilling, monitoring and other field work.
    • Training and mentoring of Technical Assistants within the team.

Reporting directly to the Chief Mine Geologist, you will be responsible for planning, scheduling, reporting and providing technical support to neighbouring departments in line with business strategy.
