The John Laycock Groundwater Award

The Man

John Laycock was a leading hydrogeologist in Queensland and also did much early work in modelling of groundwater systems.  He is noted for his work on North Stradbroke Island.  He graduated from the University of Queensland with a BSc in 1958, worked for two years in the coal industry, then joined the Qld Geological Survey in 1960 and was involved in resource mapping for two years.  In 1962 he began investigations of groundwater for regional and town supply, plus a compilation of groundwater resources of the state.  In 1975 he established a computer and information and services group, which he managed until 1987.  He did much of the early conceptual and numerical modelling of aquifers plus developed some early GIS approaches.  John officially retired in 1992, but kept an interest in modelling applications and postgraduate student research up to his death in 2001.  He was a Visiting Scholar at QUT for the last three years.

The Award

The John Laycock Groundwater Award is given by the Queensland Branch of the IAH and is aimed at inspiring final year undergraduate students in hydrogeology and groundwater investigations to consider a career in hydrogeoscience. The Award is open to all universities within Queensland whether or not they have a formal course in groundwater studies. We see this as a valuable award that reflects a high level of scholarship, learning and interest. The Award has a cash value of $500, plus a formal certificate.

The Procedure

The award will be announced at the start of Semester 2 (mid-July) for submission of an essay in mid-October.  The essay will be on a current topic of groundwater importance and be 2000 words in length.  Assessment will be by an invited panel of groundwater specialists, and the results announced around late-November.  We would aim, if possible, to present the award in person at the last IAH meeting of the year, and also encourage the university of the winning student to include a formal presentation of the award in their prize night during the following year.
