Hydrogeology of the southern Perth Basin, and vulnerability to surface watertable drawdown.

Len Baddock

Water Corporation, Perth

27th March 2006
Celtic Club - 45 Ord St, West Perth
5:30 for 6:00 Seminar

Our understanding of groundwater systems within the southern Perth Basin has advanced significantly over the last several years through investigations of the South West Yarragadee aquifer. The distribution and properties of the aquifers, confining aquitards and the main areas of groundwater recharge have been defined. The presentation will outline how knowledge of the hydrogeology facilitated identification of areas most vulnerable to drawdown effects at the watertable resulting from reduced potentiometric heads within the Yarragadee aquifer. This approach was used by the Water Corporation and Department of Water (previously Department of Environment) to identify priority areas for ecological studies as part of the proposed 45GL/a SW Yarragadee scheme. Upon most of the Blackwood Plateau, aquitards and zones of perched groundwater in the subsurface preclude significant drawdown at the surface watertable. In addition, where the depth of watertable is significant, surface ecosystems will be unaffected by changes at the watertable. Those areas identified with potential for some impact at the watertable include portions of the Swan and Scott Coastal Plains, and several valleys within the Blackwood Plateau.

About the Presenter

Len Baddock is a Senior Hydrogeologist with the Water Corporation in Perth. He has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Western Australia, and a Master of Applied Science from Curtin University, where the thesis topic was on the Yarragadee aquifer within the southern Perth Basin. He has been involved in hydrogeological investigations and groundwater resource assessments throughout Western Australia over 17 years as part of the Geological Survey of Western Australia and the Water Corporation. His involvement in the southern Perth Basin began in 1989 on the Karridale borehole line, and subsequently included drilling of the Scott Coastal Plain monitoring bore network. He was the lead hydrogeologist for the recent South West Yarragadee investigations.
