Angus McFarlane Award for Students & Early Career Hydrogeologists
Join us as we present the inaugural Angus McFarlane Award, recognising outstanding students and early career hydrogeologists who exemplify the qualities Angus was renowned for: practical problem-solving, innovation, mentoring, leadership and commitment to the hydrogeology profession.
The award celebrates the next generation of groundwater professionals and honours Angus’s lasting contribution to hydrogeology in Australia.
Student Presentations
Assessing Spatial Heterogeneity of Episodic Groundwater Recharge Responses in Water-Limited Environments Using Transfer Function Modelling
Presented by: Muqing Dong (PhD Candidate, UNSW)
Groundwater recharge is a critical yet highly variable process in water-limited environments. This presentation explores a novel soil moisture balance-transfer function modelling approach developed to improve understanding of recharge timing, occurrence and magnitude while reducing computational complexity and uncertainty. The research provides new insights into the controls on recharge processes and demonstrates an efficient framework for assessing recharge variability across groundwater systems.
Investigating Carbon Dioxide Storage Potential in Deep Saline Aquifers of NSW
Presented by: Georgia Hogan, James Strickland, Loxon Lauer, Yuya Matsui & Rachael de Courcy (University of Sydney)
With carbon capture and storage expected to play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this project investigates the suitability of deep saline aquifers across NSW for geological carbon storage. The study combines numerical modelling, geological datasets and environmental considerations to develop a regional assessment of carbon storage prospectivity and identify promising storage locations across NSW.
Students are encouraged to attend.
